Chris Welsh comes from the cognitive and scientific realm, and MaryBeth Smith comes from the kinesthetic and artistic realm: although these are by no means exclusive territory for either of them! They came to recognize how their individual work complemented, intersected with, and illuminated the other. MaryBeth and Chris developed the concept of The Brain Spa to provide their clients with a unique experience: a creative fusion where thinking, sensing, feeling, and moving interact in a complex and HIGHLY DYNAMIC SYSTEM.
You'll not only enjoy working with these two pros at the top of their fields, at the top of their games: you'll thrive in the atmosphere of support, respect, attention, humor, and curiosity that is the hallmark of The Brain Spa.
You are unique. You are the sum total of everything you have experienced, learned, seen, heard, felt, and tasted to this point in your life. Any new experience you have will go through the "filters" of your prior experiences. Thus, no two people perceive The Brain Spa in exactly the same way.
The Brain Spa offers a smorgasbord of new experiences that are both stimulating and relaxing. "Taste" a little of everything on the buffet, and then YOU decide what's useful for you. Ain't no dry classroom lectures or boring homework here! Our brand of learning is, well, experiential. Whatever your learning style, you'll be guided through exploration and experimentation. This is the way young children learn: organically, playfully, and easily. You'll enjoy each step of the process, anticipating each gentle surprise around the corner. You'll step out of your habitual patterns and preferences and into a world of new and exciting possibilities for personal growth and accomplishment. You'll be amazed at what you can do!
We capitalize on two things that are ongoing IN and FOR you:

"Movement is life. Life is a process. Change the quality of the process, and you change the quality of life itself." -- Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984).
Body movement is the "programming language" for your central nervous system. Our own bodies are the primary learning laboratory for our first several years of life, and it can continue to be so throughout a lifetime. The Feldenkrais Method® uses small, slow, gentle body movement; directed attention; and curiosity-based exploration and experimentation as a means of learning alternatives to habitual movement patterns. Each lesson provides an "Aha!" experience of heightened awareness and improved functioning. Benefits include pain relief, improved range of motion and flexibility, improved posture, balance, and coordination, sharpened cognitive abilities, improved concentration, access to creative processes, and a sense of grace, ease, and higher functioning or skill in any aspect of life.
The Feldenkrais Method® is taught in two modes: group classes, or Awareness Through Movement®; and private, one-on-one lessons called Functional Integration®. Each class or lesson is approximately one hour long: extended workshop formats are also available. Visit our website, www.houfeldenkrais.com for audios, a YouTube introductory video, and additional information. Call MaryBeth at 713.622.8794 for a phone consultation prior to attending a class or booking a private lesson.
Chris Welsh has hosted an almost-monthly Book Salon for nearly 20 years. He has a knack for choosing books that are 1) the next hot thing, and/or 2) provide a unique perspective on a topic of popular interest. The Book Salon was born when one of Chris's Mastery of Learning clients complained that, now that he could read so fast, he was reading lots of books, but had nobody to talk with about them. We meet in a private home for a light dinner featuring a delicious soup, wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and discussion of the book for the month.
Past Salon books include: Freakonomics, The World is Flat, The Brain That Changes Itself, Made to Stick, The Wisdom Paradox, Mastery, The Emperor of Scent, and The Stardancer Series.
The cost is $15 for the meal and your participation in the discussion. You can either have read the book, or have an opinion, all are welcome. Join Chris's mailing list to receive reading lists, information, and schedules for The Book Salon.
Chris and MaryBeth also host occasional but regular outings to local museums and other places of interest. Recent trips to the Houston Museum of Natural Science have included Geopalooza, Leonardo da Vinci, and Treasures of Ethiopia (featuring the famed "Lucy" fossil).
Costs vary, and include the admission price to the event, plus refreshments with discussion afterwards. You'll meet people who share a common interest, and come away with new perspectives. Contact us to receive information on upcoming field trips.
Please contact us with questions, ideas, or requests. Your experience at The Brain Spa will be customized to your needs, interests, desires, concerns, and goals.
